Protector of the Small Fan Comic Number Five. Panel 1: Sir Voelden’s lance hits Kel’s armor in the chest. The sound effect says, “DENG”. Panel 2: Tania the Local Tavern Owner reacts with, “Oooh! That was a close call! If you’re just joining us, Sir Voelden tried to murder Keladry of Mindelan while a wild griffin loses its shit!” Panel 3: Tania stands in front of a group of happy jousting enthusiasts holding tankards of drinks. She says, “I’m Tania the Local Tavern Owner standing down here in the crowds and I’m using my Gift just as Mithros intended:” Panel 4: Tania triumphantly holds up her hand with flames and sparkles from her Gift and continues, “To increase the volume of my live commentary on this jousting tournament!”
Panel 5: Tania shades her eyes with her hand and says, “And Mindelan just signaled that she will go ahead with her third run against Voelden despite the nearly fatal injury…” Panel 6: The griffin lets out a distressed screech. Panel 7: The crowd around Tania leans forward chanting, “MINDELAN! MINDELAN! MINDELAN!” Tania says, “That young squire just unhorsed Voelden! The crowd’s going wild!” Panel 8: From a distance, Kel stands over Voelden where he’s lying on the ground. Kel is pointing her sword at him. The crowd is still chanting “MINDELAN!” Tania continues, “Voelden yields to Mindelan!”
Panel 9: Tania looks concerned and says, “She looks like she desperately needs a healer.” Panel 10: Daine Sarrasri runs towards Kel, who looks unwell and is slightly bent over with one hand on Peachblossom. Tania says, “Wait, what’s this? Daine the Wild Mage has just run onto the field! Is she going to help Mindelan back to the—?” Panel 11: An arrow points past Kel to where Daine is reaching up to pet the griffin. Tania says, “No… It looks like she’s gone right past Mindelan to comfort the griffin.” Panel 12: Tania gasps with both hands over her mouth in surprise and delight. She says, “But what’s this??”
Panel 13: In the foreground, Daine kisses the griffin on its beak. Slightly behind her, Kel is shaking and holds her hand over the spot where Voelden’s lance hit her. In the background, Alanna the Lioness jogs onto the field. Tania says, “Yes folks that’s Alanna the Lioness running onto the field right now! Will she help—?” Panel 14: Tania continues, “No she’s also gone right past Mindelan… and is heading straight for Voelden! She is now attempting to stab him! This is amazing!” Panel 15: In the foreground, Daine continues to kiss the griffin on its beak. Slightly behind her, Kel has collapsed onto one knee and is in distress. In the background, Alanna chases after Voelden with her sword out. Tania concludes, “All three women are wrapped up in their own drama, each one acting as if she is the main character in her own story!”
