The Jane Gang Meets Wendell Phillips. Panel 1: Toshiaki (as portrayed by Kevin Yee), Jane Humphrey (as portrayed by Gus Birney), Abiah Root (as portrayed by Allegra Heart), and Abby (as portrayed by Sophie Zucker) are standing in The Evergreens’ blue room with a bunch of paintings hanging on the walls behind them. They are all looking at a middle-aged balding man in a dark suit. Jane is wearing a black mourning dress, so we can assume that this fan comic takes place sometime during the second season or between the second and third season of Dickinson. Jane says, “We’re loving your lecture series Mr. Phillips.” And Wendell replies, “Thank you, that’s very kind.” Panel 2: Close-up of Abby saying with a big smile, “Yeah it was amazing” Panel 3: She continues, “but you didn’t really talk about the law.” Panel 4: Wendell Phillips, looking confused, asks, “What do you mean?”
Panel 5: Abby also looks confused and asks, “Isn’t your lecture called ‘The Law Starts?” Panel 6: Wendell replies, “Oh no madam – it’s called ‘The Lost Arts’” Panel 7: Abby and Abiah’s revelation about the lecture title cannot be contained by panel borders. They exclaim, “Ooooooh!! The Lost Arrrrts” Panel 8: Jane rolls her eyes and says, “Oh my God Abby his whole lecture was obviously referencing the current political climate.”
Panel 9: Toshiaki adds, “Yeah, Wendell Phillips is a full-blown abolitionist, like Thomas Wentworth Higginson.” Higginson’s face (as portrayed by Gabriel Ebert) appears next to Toshiaki’s dialogue balloon in case you forgot who he was. Wendell’s dialogue balloon cuts in: “Please sir –“ Panel 10: Wendell is barely suppressing his rage. His face is blotchy and red and there’s a vein protruding on his forehead. “I beg you, do not say that man’s name next to mine in a sentence.” Panel 11: Toshiaki and Jane’s reaction cannot be contained by panel borders. They both dramatically GASP! Panel 12: Jane asks, “Are you guys fighting?” Toshiaki adds, “Tell us everything”
Panel 13: More of the room is visible. Toshiaki, Jane, Abiah, and Abby are standing on the left. Wendell Phillips is in the center in front of a window. Other salon guests are standing on the right. Wendell says, “Another time perhaps. My focus right now is on humanity.” The guests to the right of Wendell look excited – he’s a famous orator! Panel 14: Wendell says, “Anti-slavery agitation is an essential part of the machinery of this nation” and gestures with his hands. More people are congregating around Wendell and applauding him. Panel 15: Wendell is now standing on a chair and pointing his finger and continuing, “We’ll teach the world once and for all that America belongs to the Stars and Stripes – and under them nobody shall wear chains!” There’s even more people crowded around Wendell. They’re clapping and shouting, “Wooo!” “Yes!” “I love you Wendell!”
Panel 16: A close-up of Wendell’s excited face. He says, “And then we should tax the rich! Being rich should be undesirable in America!” Panel 17: Back to the full room, which is now completely empty. Wendell has noticed that everybody left the room and his raised finger droops. Panel 18: Sue Gilbert (as portrayed by Ella Hunt) and Austin Dickinson (as portrayed by Adrian Enscoe) are standing to the left of Wendell. They look angry – Sue has her hands on her hips and Austin has his arms crossed. Wendell looks completely dejected. Sue says, “You need to leave now.”
