Song of the Lioness fan comic Number 16. Panel 1: Alanna is trying to hold on to her sword, which is being pulled towards Duke Roger. There is an abandoned structure behind them, and the “Gate of Idramm” lies on the floor between Alanna and Roger. Roger says, “Years ago, I took up jewelry making. To each thing I made, I attached a bit of my gift, to mark it as mine. Necklaces, rings -“ Alanna interrupts him, “Wait is your soul involved in this?” Panel 2: A close-up on Alanna’s distraught face. She asks, “Do I have to go traveling around the country destroying pieces of jewelry in order to kill you?”
Panel 3: A close-up on Roger’s face as he replies, “Why would I encourage anyone to destroy jewelry?” Panel 4: The next few images and text are not contained by a comic panel. Small versions of Roger embrace different pieces of jewelry. Roger swings on a silver jewel-encrusted earring with a pearl hanging at the bottom. He lovingly leans against a gold bracelet with blue inlaid jewels. He holds a necklace pendant over his head that has a big ruby-colored jewel in it. His narration floats around these images. He says, “Jewelry has no equal. It is art. It is identity. Jewelry is the pinnacle of design. It will outlive humanity, you ignorant wart.”
Panel 5: A close-up on Roger’s face as he continues, “Any respectable gemmaphile knows better than to endanger jewelry for the sake of something as trivial as a soul.” Panel 6: A close-up on Alanna’s face as she gazes upwards and mutters, “Thank you, Great Merciful Goddess.” Panel 7: A close-up on Alanna’s shaking hands as she holds on to the sword that wants to return to Roger. Panel 8: Her hands let go and the sword flies out of her hands. On top of Panel 7 and 8, Roger’s dialogue continues, “But I wouldn’t expect someone who wears tacky earlobes to understand tha- GK!” Panel 9: A wide-shot of Alanna and Roger. Alanna has just let go of the sword, and the sword has driven itself right into Roger.
